Edios sale looks certain

It's now looking increasingly likely that media giant News Corporation are to buy videogames publisher Eidos, with insiders at the British games firm suggesting that a deal may be announced within the coming week, report Games Industry."We're just really glad the News Corp thing is out in the open now ," Games Industry's source explained. "It could happen on Thursday, it could happen on Monday - we're not sure, but there's light at the end of the tunnel now."Eidos have had a difficult couple of years with many of their key franchises under performing and have actively been courting a buyer for some months.Meanwhile, News Corporation are said to have been jealously eying the rapidly expanding videogames market and have been looking for a way into the industry. Buying Eidos will give them control of several respected brands, including Tomb Raider, Hitman and Deus Ex.Staff at Eidos are said to be very excited and pleased with their potential new owner, and are apparently already warming up their PowerPoint presentations ready to show their new bosses just how this crazy videogames industry works.

New iPods Apple today took the wraps off new versions of both the iPod mini and the iPod photo.The iPod mini is now available in two flavours. The new lower-cost, entry-level version features the same 4GB capacity as the original mini, while the high-end version contains a roomy 6GB drive - giving it even more capacity than the original full-size iPod. Both of the new minis also feature improved battery life (up to 18 hours on a single charge, claim Apple), charging via the USB cable and a new selection of colours.

Sony talk UMD movies Sony have revealed the first wave of movies that will be released on the UMD format for use on the PlayStation Portable, as well as announcing U.S. pricing for the discs.As well as the UMD version of Spider-Man 2 which will be given away free to the first people to snap up the North American version of the PSP, Sony have also announced that Hellboy, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, XXX, Once Upon a Time in Mexico and House of Flying Daggers will be released on the format. Unlike game software, which Sony say will be able to work on all PSPs, these movies will feature special region encoding that means films bought in the U.S. will only play on a North American PSP.Sony say the range of UMD movies will go on sale 'near' the American launch of the PSP, and revealed that they will cost between US$20-30 - roughly equivalent to the cost of a DVD.

Police dogs fitted with head cameras Northumbria Police are fitting some of their most highly trained dogs with special head-mounted video cameras and radio transmitters.The new FIDO camera system will be used by the force's firearms dogs that are specially trained to methodically search buildings. FIDO will allow officers to monitor live video of searches taking place.The cameras are fitted with microphones and infra-red lamps, which means the dogs can be used even in very low light conditions.Sergeant Glen Bland of Northumbria Police's dog section explained that the new camera was much lighter than older dog-mounted cameras."The previous camera system had a heavy battery pack which meant the dogs got tired quickly and were unable to go up or down a steep slope particularly fast", said Sgt Bland."There is often the situation where two firearms dogs work in the same area," continued Sgt. Bland. "But they are so well-trained they will not be distracted by what the other is doing at all."just as well, really, or else the only video the police would get is a close up of the other dog's bottom.

GTA creator finds publisher for online RPG Dave Jones, founder of DMA Design (the British developer that later become Rockstar North) and one of the important figures behind the development of the Grand Theft Auto series, has found a publisher for his next project, online RPG All Points Bulletin.

Rather than being based in the more traditional fantasy or sci-fi worlds of regular RPGS, All Points Bulletin allows PC gamers to form street gangs and do battle in hundreds online cities with players from around the world.

The publisher brave enough to take the game on, one almost certain to raise the hackles of many moralistic newspaper editors, is Korean MMORPG veteran Webzen. The game is planned for release in 2007 and is being developed by Dundee-based Real Time Worlds, the company Jones founded in 2003 with fellow industry veterans Ian Hetherington and Tony Harman .
